Philips Lumea Advanced IPL (BRI923/00) — Lumea IPL 7000 Series. Corded at-home hair reduction for legs, underarms, bikini, stomach, arms and face (below the cheekbones), with body, face and bikini attachments plus a Satin Compact pen trimmer (HP6388). Built for NZ bathrooms: plug in, follow the schedule, keep a pouch of attachments tidy.
Who it's for. Adults 18–65 with enough contrast between hair and skin — naturally dark blonde, brown or black hair on fair to medium-brown skin (roughly Fitzpatrick I–IV). Not a one-session fix: plan four starter treatments every 2 weeks, then monthly touch-ups. Check the suitability section below before you buy.
In the box: Lumea Advanced handset BRI923/00 · body attachment (4 cm²) · face attachment (2 cm², extra filter) · bikini attachment (2 cm²) · Satin Compact pen trimmer HP6388 (eyebrow comb + cleaning brush) · 24 V adapter · beauty pouch · cleaning cloth · user manual. Corded use · Lumea IPL app (free).
Is it right for my skin and hair?
IPL needs pigment contrast: the light targets melanin in the hair root. If your hair is too light or your skin is too dark, it won't work safely or well. Philips' guidance for BRI923/00:
| Usually suitable | Not suitable | |
|---|---|---|
| Hair colour | Naturally dark blonde, brown, dark brown, black | Light blonde, red, grey, white (not enough pigment) |
| Skin tone | Fair to medium brown (about I–IV) | Dark brown to dark skin (absorbs light — risk of irritation) |
- Skin Tone Sensor checks complexion at the start of a session (and sometimes during). If skin is too dark for this model, it blocks the flash.
- Hair and skin can differ by body area — legs might be fine when the face isn't, or the other way around.
- Always read the in-box chart and safety leaflet. When unsure, don't treat that area.
How IPL works (simply)
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) sends a gentle pulse into the follicle and puts it into a resting phase, so regrowth comes back finer and slower over a course of sessions. Philips developed Lumea with dermatologists for home use — treatment is designed to be safe on body and face when you use the right attachment and intensity.
Philips markets up to 12 months of hair-free smooth skin* when you stick to the plan. On philips.co.nz they also note median hair reduction after 12 treatments of about 82% on lower legs*. Individual results vary with hair colour, skin tone and how consistent you are.
Treatment schedule: every 2 weeks, then monthly
- Initial phase: 4 treatments, one every 2 weeks — Philips says that's half as many sessions as some other brands' starter plans.
- Maintenance: touch up about once a month to keep results.
- Shave the area first (don't wax or epilate right before — IPL needs a root in place).
- The free Lumea IPL app logs areas, intensity and next dates so you don't lose the thread.
Rough session times (Philips): lower leg ~15 min · underarms ~2.5 min · bikini ~4 min · face areas ~2 min.
Attachments: body, face, bikini
- Body (4 cm²) — legs, arms, stomach, underarms (below the neckline). Larger window = fewer flashes on big areas.
- Face (2 cm² + extra filter) — upper lip, chin, jawline / sideburns; for use below the eyes. Extra filter for facial safety.
- Bikini (2 cm²) — denser bikini hair; specialised window for that area.
Click the right head on before you start. Stamp-and-flash on curves; slide-and-flash on flatter areas like shins.
Skin Tone Sensor and 5 intensity settings
Pick one of five light-energy levels for comfort. Start lower on a test patch, then step up if your skin stays settled. The integrated sensor is the hard stop for skin that's too dark — don't try to override it.
- Integrated UV filter protects skin from UV in the pulse
- Safety contact system — won't flash unless the window is properly on the skin
- Extra-long cable for reaching calves and back of thighs without juggling the adapter
Face, underarms and legs at home
Same handset, different heads. Face needs the filtered face attachment; body areas use the large window; bikini hair uses the bikini head. Warm bathroom, shave first, wipe the window after each zone.
Satin Compact pen trimmer (HP6388)
Beauty Edition extras: the AAA-powered pen trimmer for brows and fine facial hairs between IPL sessions. Includes eyebrow comb and cleaning brush. It's a tidy-up tool — not a substitute for the IPL course.
Safety — read before first flash
- Do a skin test patch; wait to check for unusual redness before a full session
- Avoid treating sunburned, recently tanned or irritated skin
- Don't use on tattoos, moles, dark spots or open wounds in the treatment window
- Pregnancy, certain medications and medical conditions are exclusion cases — check Philips' leaflet
- Eyes: never flash toward the eyes; use face attachment only as directed below the eye area
- One user recommended — hygiene and sensor calibration assume a single owner

Genuine Philips? Yes — BRI923/00 from Get a Cut NZ.
Will it work on blonde / grey / red hair? Usually no — those colours lack the pigment IPL needs. See the suitability table.

Cordless? No — BRI923/00 is corded (long cable). Higher Lumea series add cordless options.
Salon vs this? Salon laser/IPL can be stronger and staff-guided; Lumea is the home course you control. Budget time for the every-2-weeks starter block.
Warranty? Philips limited warranty — keep your Get a Cut receipt and register if you want the extra year offer.
